Vineyards

In recent years, the Texas High Plains has gained international attention as a superb region for vinifera grape growing. At an elevation of 3,400 feet above sea level, the area's climate is semi-arid and mild.  Cool nights and warm to hot days predominate with low levels of relative humidity.  The soil is a deep and well-drained sandy loam ideally suited to European varietal grapes.  Most of the annual rainfall of eighteen to nineteen inches occurs during May, June and July.  Bud break is in April and harvest and crush begins in late July or early August and ends by mid-September.

The grapes for Cap*Rock wines come from carefully selected growers in the surrounding Lubbock area. The vineyards are farmed with exacting attention to excellence. These vineyards maximize modern growing techniques and utilize drip irrigation and carefully constructed trellis systems. Valves are located within each vineyard block so that individual varieties can be watered as needed.

There is an adherence to traditional farming values such as the hand-harvesting of grapes when it improves overall quality and exacting modern methods when they are the most beneficial.  The wine grape varietals currently being grown include:  Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Sangiovese, Barbera, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chenin Blanc .
